The Gannawarra Energy Storage System

Andrew Stiel, Head Energy Markets and Offtake, Edify Energy

Edify Energy recently developed and financed the Gannawarra Energy Storage System (GESS) – the first instance of a retrofit battery installation behind an existing point of connection for a renewable asset in Australia.  When complete, the combined GESS and Gannawarra Solar Farm installation will be among the largest integrated solar and storage system in the world.  GESS sets a regulatory, commercial and technical precedence for future renewables and storage assets in the NEM.

Developing this project was not without its challenges.  For instance:

  • It exposed limitations in the capacity for the current regulatory framework to seamlessly integrate storage units with renewables;
  • It highlighted a number of technical issues associated with retrofitting storage installations to existing renewable assets; and
  • It required the structuring of commercial arrangements that appropriated risk in such a way that leaves all project stakeholders comfortable in investing in a relatively new technology class and application.

This presentation will touch on these challenges and share learnings from this project with the objective that further such installations are made in the NEM, facilitating an accelerated uptake of renewable technologies in a manner consistent with the reliability objectives of the Finkel Review.

Strategies and insights on grid scale storage with wind and solar
Josef Tadich, Sales Engineering Manager, Tesla

Tesla has delivered numerous storage systems into the NEM, such as the 100MW/129MWh Neoen’s Hornsdale Power Reserve that has been operating since the end of 2017 and the soon to be commissioned 25MW/50MWh Gannawarra Energy Storage System with Edify Energy, with the Bulganna and Lake Bonney projects currently under construction. This presentation will focus on how grid-scale storage participates in the various NEM energy markets from a technical and market perspective, and specifically looks at the examples of wind and solar integration. Additionally, further insights into how these energy markets could further develop will be discussed, as well as how consumer demand is expected to change and influence these markets as we accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.

Unlocking Wind and Solar’s Value with Energy Storage

Jaad Cabbabe, Senior Manager for Business Development, Fluence

Fluence’s Jaad Cabbabe will discuss the value of combining energy storage with wind/solar generation in Australia -- specifically, offering perspective on multiple value streams including participation in the FCAS and real-time energy markets in Australia's National Energy Market. This presentation will discuss how energy storage provides value in managing wind/solar loss factors and bolstering overall system strength on regional grids.
