Grown Up Microgrids: Enabling the Energy Transformation

Historically Microgrids have been associated with smaller often offgrid systems with less than 1MW peak demand.

As Microgrids are a great enabler to integrate and maximise the value of new technologies such as solar and battery energy storage ABB recently completed two projects that demonstrate how Microgrids have now become mainstream tools for Transmission System Operators as well as Conventional Power Generators to strengthening the grid and allowing more renewables to connect to the network.

The two references sites presented are providing energy efficiency improvements of conventional gas generation plant and the second site is providing grid resilience in combination with grid strengthening services into the network.

ABB using its common technology platform for battery energy storage and automation can deliver scalable solutions if it comes to services being provided and physical system sizes.

The presentation will examine the business cases, common technology platform and the integration challenges that were overcome.

Onsite or Offsite - Microgrids versus Corporate PPA's

The emerging corporate fashion, in Australia, for purchasing large licks of energy in the last year has been the Offsite Corporate PPA.  This follows a well established trend in the US and Europe, which we seem to be catching up with.  However, we should ask what is the best way to achieve an overall energy solution that enables both long term energy savings and aids the transition to the future grid in Australia. Onsite or Offsite?

Grid-tied Microgrids to Solve the Energy Trilemma

Monash will showcase the Net Zero initiation which includes an ambitious energy efficiency program, electrification of natural gas fired plant, onsite renewable energy (solar PV), a power purchase agreement (PPA) and the deployment of a sophisticated and innovative and world-class microgrid research platform to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2030

Using a layered edge computing intelligence, distributed optimisation and next generation IoT communication system, the first phase of the Microgrid connects 25 buildings with 3MW of peak demand, 11 substations, 2.5MW of solar PV with smart inverters and solar forecasting, electric vehicle charging and the recently installed large energy storage (1MWh hybrid flow and Li-ion). The Microgrid operates as a smart city with each building treated as an individual customer to ensure replicability to a range of energy markets.

The microgrid creates a cyber-secure peer-to-pool energy market which will maximise cost effective and contestable optimisation of the energy precinct and seamlessly provide electrical stability and resilience to the precinct while making available network services to the broader grid (such as AEMO’s demand response RERT trials). 

Working with a range of industry partners such Indra, Greensync, redT and United Energy, Monash are creating a living laboratory that will provide solutions to meet the challenges of the energy trilemma.

Playing on both sides of the ledger – UQ’s plan to become a world leading ‘Gensumer’

The University of Queensland (UQ) is set to become the first university in the world to be 100% renewable through its own clean energy generation once the Warwick Solar Farm is completed by the end of 2019. This is just the beginning of UQ’s ambitions though, as we build on the unique and significant opportunities that come from being a large ‘Gensumer’  – a major energy generator in-front of the meter while also being a major energy consumer behind-the-meter. This presentation will cover the Warwick Solar Farm as well as how we are already building on this to deliver a strategy that combines on-site and off-site energy storage, controllable loads, thermal energy storage, megawatt scale automated demand response, and back-up generators to provide sustainable, firmed, low cost energy to UQ’s operations, and to position the organisation as a world leader in this space.
