ARENA’s bioenergy and energy from waste strategy and how MSM Milling Fuel Switch Project is an important piece in that strategy

Matt Walden, Transaction Specialist , Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA)

The MSM Milling Biomass Fuel Switch Project replaces LPG-fuelled boilers with a 5MW biomass-fuelled boiler using locally sourced timber residue as a fuel source and was recently awarded a $2 million grant under ARENA’s Advancing Renewables Program. The new biomass boiler will displace several smaller LPG boilers and save over 80,000tCO2-e over the project life.

Bob Mac Smith is the director of MSM Milling and is overseeing the construction, installation and implementation of the 5MW biomass-fuelled boiler. MSM Milling is a 100% Australian owned and operated fully integrated oilseed processing and packing operation based in Manildra, NSW. Bob Mac Smith will be giving an overview of the key drivers for the fuel switch project as well as detailing the benefits, challenges and progress of the project to date. The presentation will also give details regarding the biomass energy source used in the project and how MSM Milling has managed the procurement process, logistics and risks associated with the renewable fuel source.

MSM Milling is also working with carbon energy and environmental specialists Ndevr Environmental. Matt Drum of Ndevr Environmental has a wealth of knowledge and experience in carbon and energy compliance and strategy. MSM Milling initially engaged Ndevr in 2015 to assess the emissions reduction potential of switching to biomass. Ndevr Environmental’s managing Director Matt Drum has led MSM’s ARENA funding application and Ndevr Environmental is now the official Knowledge Sharing Partner for project. Matt Drum will be discussing renewable energy funding, the pathway to commercialisation of bioenergy in Australia and the barriers to entry for the technology.

ARENA is supporting Australia’s shift towards a sustainable, affordable and reliable renewable energy future. As part of this role ARENA has funded the MSM Milling Fuel Switch Project and is taking an active role towards supporting bioenergy and energy from waste projects more broadly. ARENA’s presentation will detail its investment priorities and role in disseminating knowledge sharing from its portfolio projects. ARENA will discuss its bioenergy and energy from waste strategy and how MSM Milling Fuel Switch Project is an important piece in that strategy. ARENA will also highlight its other recent projects in the bioenergy sector.

Business’s preparedness for emerging technologies

Sylvia Terry, Managing Director, CommBank Asset Finance

Sylvia Terry, Managing Director, CommBank Asset Finance, will provide key insights from the CommBank Asset Financing Australia Index, a research program which has been in market for more than 3 years partnering with East and Partners. This session will focus on Australian business’s preparedness for emerging  technologies in their respective industries, what energy efficient equipment investments businesses are currently or likely to make into the future and what would encourage further investment in sustainable equipment options.

These insights will also be accompanied by an overview of what CommBank is doing to assist businesses to make investment in more energy efficient equipment models. Specific industries which have benefited from this including construction, agricultural, and customers who have large scale solar, wind, and LED lighting installations in their properties.
