Unlocking Australia’s Renewable Energy Future

Vincent Ong, Customer Planning Manager, TransGrid

Blessed with renewable energy resources that could power the nation many times over, Australia is nonetheless facing a shortfall in generation as coal-fired plants withdraw from the NEM. With little prospect of like-for-like replacement, large scale solar and wind stand are the only viable sources for new generation. With a strategic approach to new large scale solar and wind, Australia can unlock our massive energy resources and secure a reliable energy mix for our future.

An expanded role for Tasmania in the Future NEM

Chris Gwynne, Program Director, Battery of the Nation, Hydro Tasmania

  • A changing conversation around the future of the NEM.
  • As the physical market begins to change, real options for firming capacity and “ancillary services” will become more important.
  • These changes are prompting Hydro Tasmania to look at our current assets, and future opportunities, through a different lens.
  • Battery of the Nation will investigate and develop a pathway of future development opportunities for Tasmania to make a greater contribution to a future NEM
  • Support reliable and cost-competitive energy supply for Tasmanians and customers in the NEM,
  • Be good for the Tasmanian economy,
  • Make a material contribution to the decarbonisation of the NEM, and
  • Support energy security in Tasmania and in the NEM.
