Supporting businesses to improve gas efficiency

Yolanda Sztarr, Project Lead – Business Productivity, Sustainability Victoria

“Right now, it’s cheaper to buy Australian gas in Japan than it is in Victoria, which is putting pressure on local businesses, jobs, and household gas bills.” - Victorian Government media release, 13 August 2017

Sustainability Victoria is supporting businesses by providing practical and cost effect ideas on how businesses can cut gas costs with the help of energy efficiency. In this presentation, Yolanda Sztarr will share highlights from the Gas Efficiency Masterclasses (being delivered free throughout Victoria in September and October 2017) and video case studies profiling the experience of small and medium sized businesses. The presentation will provide Information on project financing including the new Gas Efficiency Grants being delivered by Sustainability Victoria as part of the Victorian Government’s $6.1 million Boosting Business Productivity program.

Gas Efficiency Grants of up to $50,000 will be available for businesses to invest in gas-related projects including capital equipment upgrades, non-routine maintenance and repairs, fuel switching, and improved metering. These will improve energy productivity and affordability, support jobs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Keynote : Victorian Water Industry Energy Projects

John Day, Executive Manager Operations, North East Water

The IWN is a funded space for the Victorian water industry to investigate and invest in innovation that improves the way we do business and provide benefits to our customers in a collaborative manner.

One of the IWN project streams is the energy and asset optimisation group. This group is current working on 5 projects

1. Energy procurement alternative models

2. Large Scale Renewable energy

3. Small scale renewable energy generation and storage

4. Aeration energy benchmarking

5. Pumpchekr energy optimisation software

These 5 projects are all intended to reduce the carbon footprint of the Victorian water industry while reducing running costs and in turn keeping customers isolated from rising energy costs.

The large scale renewable energy project will supply 30MW of power into the grid for use by all 17 water corporations as green energy.

The small scale energy generation and storage will investigate whether small town water and waste water treatment plants can reduce their reliance on grid connection allowing for financial savings and power supply issues during an emergency such as storm and fire events.

John will give an detailed insight in both of these projects which are programed to be completed by the end of 2017.
