Projections of Residential Energy Storage to 2030

Paul Ryan, Director, EnergyConsult Pty Ltd

This presentation provides updated forecasts of the potential electric energy and demand impacts for different uptake scenarios for battery storage systems in the residential sector. These scenarios were modelled using a detailed residential energy model recently used to produce the third Australian Residential Baseline Study of national residential energy use. This unique model calculates the energy and power demand impacts of more than 120 different products in the residential sector for Australia, using detailed data researched for each product.

The modelling of battery storage systems shows that their introduction may have the potential to reduce residential peak demand by 2,700 MW by 2030, and improve the electricity system load shape. The presentation shows that the estimated impact of battery storage system, modelled by the Australian Energy Market Operator in 2016 underestimates the uptake and provides updated evidence to support the new projections. To manage the impacts of battery storage systems on the electricity grid, smart charging control systems will need to be integrated into these new technologies. Electricity tariffs and associated control platforms will need to be developed that encourage the use effective of energy storage in the residential sector.

Insights and observations in building the world's largest residential Virtual Power Plant (VPP)

Philip Keogan, SVP Asia Pacific & Japan , Sunverge Energy Australia Pty. Ltd.

Led by Sunverge’s commercial partner in Australia, AGL, this project in Adelaide is aiming to deliver value to customers, networks, the wholesale market and the broader energy ecosystem.

As the supplier of both the software platform and battery storage hardware across 1,000 homes – creating what is currently the world’s largest residential VPP project - Sunverge is building a wealth of knowledge in what it takes to build a smart, connected, DER system at scale.

This knowledge is being further enhanced by similar projects elsewhere, such as the one we are delivering in New York for Con Edison.

From a supplier perspective, Martin will summarise real-world insights and observations from these projects to date, covering areas such as:

• Optimising software algorithms to deliver value to all stakeholders

• Optimising hardware design to maximise performance and minimise installation costs

• Scaling business operations and processes cost-effectively

• Input to Sunverge’s platform roadmap to enable the creation of larger VPPs both in Australia and internationally

Show me the money – Calculating the true ROI for residential battery storage

Rod Scott, CEO of Selectronic Australia

With the worldwide upsurge of awareness in energy storage and as the industry matures beyond the early adopters and outliers the question remains “do the numbers stack up for mainstream customers?”

  • How can we calculate the numbers and know the right design for the best return?
  • Beyond finding the magic $ figure per kWh?
  • Multiple cycles per day vs one cycle?
  • Can we decrease costs by actually increasing electricity consumption?
  • How do we monitor the costs throughout the ESS life?
  • Is it possible to offer a performance guarantee?
  • How do different battery chemistries influence the return on investment?
  • Is smart storage the key for future returns and efficiencies?
  • Non-tangible benefits
  • Aggregated DER and ESS
