International experience in deploying solar to provide industrial heat

Ken Guthrie, Director, Sustainable Energy Transformation Pty Ltd, Chair International Energy Agency Solar Heating and Cooling Program

About 50% of the energy used worldwide is consumed as heat.  In Australia, industry uses a significant amount of heat at low temperatures which is currently supplied by gas.  International examples of solar use in Industry indicates that there are many cost effective opportunities to use solar to provide heat energy from onsite or off-site installations.  The examples discussed will illustrate the findings of the IEA SHC work regarding provision of large scale heat, including seasonal storage in some cases, by solar heating technologies.
