James Allston, Marketing Manager, Siemens
James AllstonJames, a self-proclaimed "corporate hippie", has developed into an enterprising Marketing Manager in a short but dynamic career. Looking after the energy efficiency portfolio for Siemens Pacific Cluster, James has an innate passion for climate change mitigation which has been advantageous to his roles as Graduate Engineer and Product Manager for Siemens energy and environmental solutions. A testament to his determined nature, James was a founding member of the Energy Efficiency Council and has recently been promoted to Vice President after a short term as Secretary.

James also attributes his career success to his thirst for knowledge, not just on engineering principles but a broad understanding of the political, social, technological and economic structures that intrinsically envelope issues such as climate change and the energy market. Graduating with first class honours in engineering at the University of Tasmania, James’ academic history contributes to his accomplishments as an engineer, marketer and advocate for energy efficiency.

Careers in energy: Making a difference
The energy industry is buffeted from many directions by forces of change: resource availability, rising prices, climate change and energy security are all gradually changing the nature of Australia’s energy markets.

In this presentation, Mark Collette will outline a number of challenges faced by energy market participants, and suggest some of the careers that could evolve as young energy professionals address these challenges.

Mark Collette, Director, Portfolio Management and Development, TRUenergy
Mark ColletteMark Collette believes there are few challenges more interesting than the future of energy. Challenges around energy security, climate change and resource availability are difficult to solve, but the difficulties make for very interesting careers.

Holding degrees in Aerospace Engineering, Business Administration and Economics, Mark began his career with management consulting firm L.E.K. Consulting before joining the energy industry in 2003. Mark began his energy career working as Middle Office Manager for Yallourn Energy, a subsidiary of Hong Kong based CLP Holdings.

In 2005, CLP Holdings purchased the former retail business of TXU and created TRUenergy through merger with Yallourn Energy. Since then, Mark has worked in a variety of roles including corporate strategy, sustainability and portfolio optimisation.  In all of these roles he has been focused on preparing TRUenergy’s portfolio to best adapt to a carbon constrained future.

Mark is currently Director, Portfolio Management and Development, responsible for wholesale market activities including hedging and dispatching power stations, industrial and commercial energy sales, gas supply, renewable contracting, wholesale regulation and renewable power development.
