All-Energy Australia Technical Tours
We will be arranging a full and interesting programme of technical tours at All-Energy Australia 2010. More information will be available here soon.
In 2009 there were four free technical tours - details and pictures below.
1. Carbon Capture, Loy Yang Power Station
2. CO2CRC, Otway Project
3. Energy Efficiency, CH2 / Fosters, Abbotsford Brewery
4. Biogas Facility, Melbourne Water
Delegates visit Loy Yang Power Station on 9 October, 2009
Professor Rob Adams addresses delegates on the Energy Efficiency tour to CH2 (Council House 2) in Melbourne on 9 October, 2009.
All-Energy '09 tours below
Tour 1: Carbon Capture, Loy Yang Power Station. 8:00am - 5:30pm
Approx. 2.5 hours travel by coach from Melbourne, with a stop during the day to enable lunch to be purchased. Closed and flat shoes are essential. Loy Yang Power owns and operates a 2200 megawatt power station and adjacent brown coal mine near Traralgon, workings in partnership with the Victorian and federal governments and research organisations to explore a range of options with the potential to deliver significant CO2 reductions from brown coal electricity generation. The visit includes a power station tour, a close-up view of the Loy Yang mine and an overview of a pilot post combustion capture plant.
Tour 2: CO2CRC, Otway Project. 8:00am - 7:00pm
The Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2CRC) conducts comprehensive research into carbon dioxide capture and geological storage, or CCS, with significant support from Australian and international governments, industry and research organisations. The CO2CRC Otway Project is Australia’s first demonstration of the geological storage of carbon dioxide, with one of world’s most comprehensive monitoring and verification programs. The project is located on the Great Ocean Road about three hours drive from Melbourne, near the iconic Twelve Apostles and Victoria’s spectacular shipwreck coast. This is a full day so be prepared - bring your wind/rain jacket as this part of the world can be very windy and cold!
Tour 3: Energy Efficiency, CH2 / Fosters, Abbotsford Brewery.
8:30am - 1:00pm
This is a two-stop tour highlighting built environment and industrial energy efficiency.
- Council House 2 (CH2): City of Melbourne offices, 240 Little Collins Street, Melbourne.Officially opened in August 2006, CH2 was Australia’s first 6 star greenstar rated commercial office building.
This tour will cover the key design and sustainability features of this building.
- the tour continues onto Fosters’ Abbotsford Brewery, the largest brewery in Australia, with origins dating back to the 1900s. Last year it produced 450 million litres of beer. In recent years over $100m has been spent on projects with direct/indirect energy & water efficiency improvements. The site has improved both energy and water efficiency by 25% (per unit volume) since 2000.
Tour 4: Biogas Facility, Melbourne Water. 8.50am - 1:00pm
This is a one stop tour about an hour by bus from Melbourne. Melbourne Water has committed to targets to reduce net greenhouse emissions to zero and to use or export 100% renewable energy by 2018. The processes used at the Western Treatment Plant to capture and use biogas produced for generation of electricity deliver significant renewable energy and greenhouse gas benefits.Melbourne Water has a contract with AGL to use the biogas trapped under the lagoon covers to generate electricity for the plant. The power generation facilities are capable of producing 8MW of electricity. An additional 2MW in generating capacity is planned to be commissioned by June 2010. This is expected to allow net export of electricity from the plant. Exported renewable electricity will be used at other Melbourne Water sites.
