Nanotube Thermocells Hold Promise

The research was a joint collaboration between Baratunde Cola, assistant professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech, and an international team of researchers from the U.S., Australia, China, India and the Philippines.

Cola, director of Georgia Tech’s NanoEngineered Systems and Transport Research Group (NEST), described the study as a breakthrough in efficiently harvesting electrical energy from various sources of exhaust or wasted heat.

Geothermal energy: too dangerous?
Earlier this month, a $60 million project to extract renewable energy from the hot bedrock deep beneath Basel, Switzerland, was shut down after a government study determined that earthquakes generated by the project were likely to do millions of dollars in damage each year, the New York Times reported. The project was first suspended in 2006 after it generated earthquakes that caused about $9 million in damage to other structures.

Australia funds five geothermal projects
Geothermal energy, has received a $35-million funding boost from the Australian government. According to federal resources and energy minister Martin Ferguson, the money would go towards five projects - two in Victoria and one each in New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia.

A hot future for geothermal
Capturing energy from the earth’s heat is pretty easy pickin’s for geologically-active areas of the world like Iceland, Indonesia, and Chile. Geothermal Energy Research Centre Opens

A new research centre, which will develop methods to power cities and desalinate water using geothermal energy, has been opened in Perth, Western Australia.

The Western Australian Geothermal Centre of Excellence (WAGCOE) is a partnership between CSIRO and The University of Western Australia and the Curtin University of Technology, with funding for the project provided by the WA State Government, a CSIRO  news release reported.
