Norway trials osmotic power
A marine power plant that uses osmosis to generate electricity is being trialled in Norway …… The plant, built and operated by Norwegian energy company Statkraft not far from Oslo, employs a technique known as osmotic power generation, which uses the difference in salinity between seawater and fresh water to drive an electricity-generating turbine.

Wave energy to be exploited by Oz
According to World Energy Council many of the best locations on the world for wave energy exploitation are placed on Australia’s southern coast. Chatham Islands NZ, wave project receives backing
A project to harness wave energy on the Chatham Islands has been awarded funding under the government's Marine Energy Deployment Fund, Energy and Resources Minister Gerry Brownlee announced today.
The proposal put forward by Chatham Islands Marine Energy Ltd (CHIME), to install a shore-based device to capture wave energy, has been awarded $2.16 million, subject to conditions, including receiving resource consent.

Woodside in talks with Tidal Energy
Woodside Petroleum Ltd has undertaken informal discussions with renewable energy company Tidal Power over the possibility of using its technology to provide power for the oil producer's James Point LNG project, the Australian Financial Review reports.
Tidal Energy is the operator of a stalled $400 million tidal river energy project in the Kimberley region, which it says could supply a small portion of the proposed LNG operation's total electricity requirements.

Hydropower Turbines Spread to Paris
Paris Deputy Mayor Denis Baupin has announced plans for the French city to join Alaska, New York, and Ontario in turning to hydropower for a renewable energy solution. Sea snake deal gives Pelamis £5m boost
The era of commercial wave farms off Scotland's coast has come a step closer following ScottishPower Renewables' purchase of a second-generation "sea snake" device from Leith-based Pelamis. The P2 Pelamis wave generator will be tested in the stormy seas off Orkney from summer 2011, with a view to maximising performance and proving its commercial viability in different sea conditions ahead of full commercial deployment. ScottishPower is to pay Pelamis £5 million for the device, with 40 per cent coming from the Scottish Government's Wave and Tidal Energy Support Scheme. The cost of the device is expected to come down substantially should it enter mass production.

Tidal power: S.Korea to invest $1bn
Korea Western Power Corp (WP) will invest a total of 1.22 trillion won ($1.07 billion) to build 20 tidal power plants likely from next year through 2014, the government and officials at the utility said. The power plants, to be located in about 200 km southwest of Seoul, will have a total capacity of 520 megawatts (MW), the world's largest, they said.

Carnegie launches wave energy project
The state government and Carnegie Wave Energy have celebrated the next stage in the development of a five megawatt demonstration wave power station near Garden Island.
